“Hartlepool Adult Education is a great place to study. Completing the Level 1 and 2 in Functional Maths and English courses has definitely improved my confidence to allow me to do further qualifications.

Adult Education were also flexible and supportive which has also allowed me to complete a Customer Service NVQ Level 2 around my personal needs. This has allowed me to develop my skills and gain employment.”

Ian Prested

After suffering from anxiety for some time I decided that I needed to do something to increase my confidence to get back into the workplace.

I enrolled on the Certificate in Education course with Hartlepool Adult Education in September 2015. I found the course very rewarding, and challenging at times, but with excellent support from my tutor and classmates I went on to successfully complete the course and gain the teaching qualification I was aiming for.

I decided that I wanted to stay with Hartlepool Adult Education! I realised I needed to update the skills in the subject I wanted to teach, so I completed ECDL Level 2, and also volunteered through Volunteer Hartlepool, to gain invaluable work experience by supporting tutors and learners with using IT in the classroom.

In May 2017 I applied for a job as a tutor and I was delighted to be offered the position.

Ian has been an excellent student and has made an invaluable contribution to the service as a learner and volunteer. We have seen his confidence grow, and we are delighted that he has achieved his goal of being employed as a tutor. We wish him every success for the future.

“I started my learning journey with Hartlepool Adult Education in September 2013, gaining British Sign Language Level 1, then, with excellent tuition and support, going on to complete the Level 2 qualification as well.

With each course my confidence and love of learning grew, and over the next 2 years I achieved a grade B in GCSE English, and levels 1 and 2 in Maths.

This has enabled me to study British Sign Language Level 3 and A Level Linguistics at Newcastle College, and I am busy preparing for my exams in a few weeks time. I also work as a Communication Support Worker at Hartlepool Deaf Centre, which I find very rewarding.  My goal is to carry on with my studies and find employment as an interpreter.

All of this has come from my first steps in to a classroom. Hartlepool Adult Education has truly changed my life!”

“After sustaining serious injuries resulting from a fall, I was unable to carry on with the manual job I had done for a great number of years.  Having no formal qualifications, I realised that I needed to gain some office work and IT skills. I noticed an advertisement in the local newspaper regarding courses at Hartlepool Adult Education, so I contacted them and started a course, which I then achieved and progressed onto further courses.

I of all people would not have believed that I could have made the progress I did as when I first started as I had no computer skills. I used pen and paper, until with the help of the tutors, I developed my IT skills and the use of Microsoft Word.

Hartlepool Adult Education and their tutors brought out things in me that I never thought I would be able to manage. Just goes to show that old dogs can learn new tricks with the help of the right people!”

“From a very young age I’ve always suffered health problems and even had to miss a full year of school. I eventually completed school but due to the issues I lost my confidence and became very anxious.

I decided to join Hartlepool Adult Education and I am so pleased that I did. I started by completing a computer course (ECDL). It improved my confidence and have since completed courses in Bookkeeping, Sage Payroll, Food Safety Level 2, Business Administration Level 1 and English Level 2.

I am keen to learn new skills and have progressed onto Business Administration Level 2 and will shortly be starting a level 2 qualification in Information, Advice and Guidance”
